 Hell on Hooves Tour

What does a bull rider get out of doing an event other than bruises? Eight-buckle winner Trevor West said, “I ride for the thrill.”

More than 1,000 people came to watch the mutton bustin', barrel-racing, bull-riding, and bronc riding events at the Linn County Expo Center on Feb.3.

The announcer Wayne White started the event off with a bang when he said, “There is one thing that I believe right now and that is we need to have America first! As this American flag comes around I hope you can say it with me on the count of three.”

“One…two…three!”

And the crowd eagerly yelled, “America first!”

At the Hell on Hooves rodeo, the thrill of the events was tangible. The crowd stomped, clapped, and hollered inviting the events to start. Animals kicked dust up into the stands and the crowd continued to cheer.

For preparation West and the rest of the Bronc and Bull riders are seen doing rosin change, wrist, shoulder, and groin stretches.

World champion saddle bronc rider, 17-year-old Shane Scott impressed the crowd with his strength to stay on the bucking horse when he placed in the top-five finalists to compete in the next rodeo.

The Mutton Bustin’ event was a clear crowd favorite. Parents lined up early just to sign their kids up to race. Some kids anxiously waited their turn, maybe not even knowing what they were getting into.

The only requirement to compete in the mutton bustin’ event is to be older than 4 years old and under 55 pounds. The kids with the longest time had the strongest grip on the sheep’s thick wool. The children with a looser grip fell and face-planting into the dust but the rodeo clowns would come running to the rescue to cheer them up.

Mackenzie Parks thrilled the crowd with her barrel-racing skills when she won the buckle for her 13.764 second time around the arena.

The 1,000-plus crowd sang, stomped, and clapped together when “We Will Rock You” played on the speakers. The energy of the crowd made the events all the more exciting.

Anne-Mane Storms and the Oregon High School Equestrian team served as security at this event and had to repeatedly remind people to not stand in front of the audience to try and get closer to the arena and the atmosphere of the riders.

Eric Ingbretson has been helping out his friends doing events here for the past three years. It was amazing to see how all the helpers and people doing the events worked together.
